Most websites and apps run well on a VPS. A dedicated server is the right tool for a smaller group of workloads. This guide shows the difference, and the questions that tell you which one you need.
The short answer
- Choose a Cloud VPS if you run websites, APIs, bots, small and medium databases, or you are just starting. Plans start from ₹899 a month and are ready in minutes.
- Choose a dedicated server if your work keeps most of a machine busy all day: large databases, game servers, video processing or a busy platform.
- Not sure? Start on a VPS. You can move to a dedicated server later, and we can help with the move.
What is the real difference?
A VPS is a virtual machine: a guaranteed share of a larger physical server. A dedicated server is the whole physical machine, reserved for you. With a VPS you can change size quickly. With a dedicated server nothing is shared, so the performance does not change when other customers are busy.
| Cloud VPS | Dedicated server | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A virtual machine with set CPU, memory and disk | An entire physical server |
| Ready in | Minutes, set up by itself | Set up by our team after payment |
| Price | Fixed plans from ₹899 a month | Quoted in rupees for your configuration |
| Performance | Guaranteed share of resources | The full machine, always |
| Root access | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Websites, apps, bots, most databases | Heavy databases, game servers, large platforms |
Six questions that decide it
1. How busy is your server today?
Look at the CPU and memory graphs of your current server over a normal week. If it sits mostly idle with short peaks, a VPS is enough. If it stays above about two thirds of CPU or memory for much of the day, you are close to needing a bigger machine.
2. How big is your database?
Databases are fast when the data they use most fits in memory. If your working data is larger than the memory of the biggest VPS plan, a dedicated server with more memory will help more than any tuning.
3. Does your speed need to be steady?
Game servers, trading tools and real-time apps need steady response times. A dedicated machine removes the chance of a busy neighbour.
4. Do you need special hardware settings?
Some work needs control of disks, network cards or virtualization on the machine itself. That is a job for a dedicated server.
5. How fast must you be able to change size?
A VPS can be resized and replaced quickly. A dedicated server is a commitment to a set machine, so plan its size with some room to grow.
6. Who will look after it?
Both give you root access. If you do not want to patch, secure and watch the server yourself, ask about our managed services.
Signs it is time to move up
- The server is slow in the evening or during sales, and the graphs show CPU or memory at the limit.
- You keep adding memory or cores and the next VPS size costs close to a dedicated server.
- The database no longer fits comfortably in memory.
- You run many busy sites or services on one machine and they disturb each other.
Moving from a VPS to a dedicated server
A move is a copy of your sites, databases and settings to the new machine, then a DNS change at a time you choose. The old server keeps running until you are happy, so there is a way back. Read how our migration service does it.
