Dedicated servers do not have one price, because every machine is built from different parts. This guide explains what the price is made of, so you can ask for the right server and compare quotes fairly.
What the price is made of
Processor and cores
More cores and a faster processor cost more. Count how many cores your work really uses at its busiest, then add some room. Paying for cores that stay idle is the most common waste.
Memory (RAM)
Databases, caches and virtual machines use memory heavily. Size it to your working data, not to a fixed bundle. It is easier to start with enough and add later than to run out in production.
Storage: size and type
NVMe SSD is the fastest and best for databases. SATA SSD is cheaper and fine for many sites. Large hard drives suit bulk files and backups. Two drives in a mirror protect against one drive failing, at the price of the second drive. Decide what you need for speed and what you need for space.
Network and bandwidth
Tell us the traffic you expect each month and the speed you need. The network is sized and quoted with the server.
Location
Servers run from India-first locations, including Kolkata. Pick the location closest to most of your visitors.
Operating system and licences
Linux is included. Windows Server, a control panel or database licences are extra and quoted separately.
Management and backups
A dedicated server gives you root access. If you want us to patch, secure and watch it, or to keep backups, ask for our managed services on top.
GST
Quotes and invoices are in Indian rupees, and GST is added on top.
A checklist for asking for a quote
The more of these you answer, the faster you get an exact price.
- What will run on the server (for example a MySQL database and an online shop)?
- How many CPU cores does it use at its busiest?
- How much memory does your data need?
- How much storage, and should it be NVMe, SSD or hard drives? Do you need a mirror?
- How much traffic each month?
- Which location?
- Linux or Windows?
- Do you want us to manage the server, and do you need backups?
- Your monthly budget, if you have one.
You can answer all of this in one short form: send a dedicated server query.
Mistakes that cost money
- Buying for the peak of next year. Size for today with some room to grow, or start on a VPS and move when the graphs say so.
- Forgetting backups. A server is one machine. Plan where your backups live, and test a restore.
- Comparing only the headline price. Check bandwidth, licences, setup and the billing period in every quote.
- Paying for speed you do not use. Fast NVMe is worth it for a database, and a waste for a folder of old files.
- Skipping a plan for monitoring and security. An unwatched server is a risk. Decide who will patch and watch it.
Do you need a dedicated server at all?
If your server is not busy most of the day, a Cloud VPS from ₹899 a month may be enough. Read VPS or dedicated server: how to choose.
