Many good VPS providers are based outside India. Some are the right choice. This guide helps you compare on the points that matter to a buyer in India, so you choose on facts and not on a logo.
The short answer
- Choose an Indian host if most of your visitors are in India, you want to pay in rupees by UPI, and you need a GST invoice and support in your time zone.
- Choose an overseas host if most of your visitors are abroad, you need servers in many countries, or you need a service that only the big global providers offer.
- Test before you commit. The checks below take about ten minutes.
1. How you pay, and what it really costs
Many overseas hosts bill in dollars and expect an international card. Your bank may add a currency conversion charge and a foreign transaction fee, and the rupee price moves with the exchange rate. Some Indian cards are also declined for overseas online payments. An Indian host that bills in rupees lets you pay by UPI, a local card or net banking, and the price on the page is the price you pay. Always compare the total in rupees, with fees.
2. The invoice
A GST-registered business needs a proper tax invoice with its GSTIN to claim input tax credit where it applies. Ask any host you consider for a sample invoice. Check that it shows your company name, your GSTIN and the GST as a separate line. If you are not GST registered, a clear invoice in rupees still makes your bookkeeping easier.
3. Speed for your visitors
Distance adds delay. A server in India is usually faster for visitors in India than one in another continent. But routes differ, so measure. From your own computer, or from a friend's in another city, run:
ping -c 10 your-test-server-ip mtr -rwc 20 your-test-server-ip
Compare the average time and the packet loss for each host you test. Most good hosts will give you a test IP or a short trial if you ask. For a site with visitors worldwide, also consider a CDN.
4. Support: hours, language and who answers
When a server is down at 10 am Indian time, it helps to reach a person who works in your time zone and speaks your language. Ask how support works: by ticket, email or phone, what the stated reply time is, and whether the people answering can log in and look at your server when you ask them to.
5. Where your data sits
Some businesses must, or prefer to, keep data in India because of client contracts or sector rules. This is a question for your own situation. A trustworthy host tells you in which country and city your server runs. Our servers run from India-first locations, including Kolkata. Read more on the data centers page.
What is the same everywhere
These matter just as much, whoever you choose: the virtualization type (KVM gives you a proper virtual machine), storage speed (NVMe is faster than older disks), full root access, the size of the monthly bandwidth, how backups work, and whether the renewal price equals the first price.
